Magpie Apprentice Program

The aim of the Magpie Umbrella apprentice apprentice program is to allow for young professionals who are interested in experimental dance or music to integrate their work in a practical manner by studio, performance and project work and to allow for them to influence how the magpie collective evolves.

Since 2001 Magpie has accepted apprentices as part of their education wing. Apprentices were placed within the single company forum in the past and since 2007-8 with the change over to an umbrella organization, apprentices were placed within the local Amsterdam projects - Music Dance 301 / Wonderland / Saturday sessions / Brain studies plus given support to create their own projects plus have access to all of the Magpie rehearsal or free lance sessions.

For the 2009 season Magpie will be holding their apprentice program within the period of June until August. The apprentice program will correspond with their new initiative – “summer workshop intensive”.
Apprentices will be given full access to all of the magpie projects and sessions as they have been given in the past however they will be asked to attend the complete series of workshops over the summer. They will need to pay a fee of 400 Euros to cover the workshops (less the ½ of the total workshop fees).

Magpie can send an invitation to the apprentice artist so that they can apply for funding. Magpie cannot help with your housing for the period of the apprentice program in Amsterdam. The artist needs to find options for this within their funding application and be aware that housing in Amsterdam is difficult and needs to be worked out in advance.

In order to apply for the Magpie apprentice program you need to go to Katie Duck. Katie can accept up to 5 apprentices for their summer program. She will need to see your CV and receive a letter of motivation. If accepted in this program you will receive an official invitation for you to then use to apply for your funding.

The magpie apprentice program has included young artists from Spain, Greece, the USA, Austria, Australia, Korea and New Zealand. Each of these artists are either pursuing their professional careers as experimental dance or music artists or are taking part in the Magpie Umbrella collective. Each have been influenced by their apprentice period with Magpie and in turn the Magpie collective has shifted according to their very keen insight into contemporary trends for experimental live art work.
