Born in 1971 in France, Sylvain first became interested in the artistic fields via
paintings by Elizabeth Batard. He then obtained a Bachelor of Visual Art at Bordeaux
University together with a five-year graduation (DNSEP) from the School of Beaux-Arts to
develop a work Contact body/ movements/ representation. At this time he became involved in
contemporary dance with choreographers J.F. Duroure and Mari Siles.
At the end of his studies, he was accepted at P.A.R.T.S (Brussels) and studies with
teachers such as Lance Gries, David Hernandez, Elizabeth Corbett, Randy Warshaw, and Simon
de Mowbray (among others). He He then re located to Paris where he continued his developed
dancing with José Cazeneuve, Peter Goss, Vera Mantero, Thierry Bae, and Patricia Kuypers.
He furthered his dance education in seminars Contact B.M.C. (Vera Orlock), Alexander
Technique (G. Estran), and Feldenkrais (J. Leibovici, Qi Qong, and Li Jung Feng).
Between 1998 and 2002, he performed in choreographies by Christiane Blaise, Virginie
Mirbeau, Felix Rücker, Arnold Pasquier, Company B.Valiente, and Martin Sonderkamp. These
productions toured in France, Belgium, Norway and Holland. In 2001 he became been a member
of the Magpie Music Dance Company. Alongside his work with Magpie he has continued to work
as a freelance dance artist with companies in France and Europe and centralizing his
research and teaching in Bordeaux, France at les ateliers de la manutention.
In 2003-4, he continued work with Magpie Music Dance Company and collaborated in
productions with artists Vincent Cacialano - playing death chair, Vincent
Cacialano, Marijo Siles and Jose Cazenueve - il n’y a rien a faire, juste. He
created a solo - Vibroscopie1.2, (video and dance) and worked as video designer
for Mari Siles’s solo production deux en1=3.
He is currently based in Bordeaux where he teaches dance, improvisation at La
Manutention, the Tisch (New York University) and Cefedem de Normandy,
produces his own work, conducts collaboration projects, teaches workshops internationally
and continues to work in the Magpie Music dance Company. His workshops and projects are
based in movement research for contemporary dance and improvisation with scientific
approaches that provide a range of tools for formal, sensitive and specific movement and
composition skills. He has combined this interest with research Contact internal energetic
systems and emotional patterning alongside terminologies used in new technologies aimed at
composition and performance.
