Magpie was formed in 1995 in direct response to a need to reconsider Improvised performance within a contemporary context. Since 2006 Magpie has evolved from a single-focus music and dance company to an umbrella organization. Underlying all Magpie Umbrella Projects is the notion that improvisation is not the antithesis of choreography or composition; it is how the choreographies and compositions are made.
